Day One

I really enjoyed the trip to the International Civil Rights Museum, for I learned a lot of new information. I feel like though I know the basics of the well known Civil Rights events, I know very little about the details and people who played a big role but weren’t as known. A few things I found interesting today:
  • Woolworth's first black customers to be served were their black employees (who they asked to dress in street clothes for that moment).
  • There was a “Green Book” that showed black people where they would be safe, allowed to stay, get gas, etc.
  • The Jim Crow character was the origin of black face
And a powerful quote I saw in the section of the museum about Helen Suzman: “Tell me another country in the world where nearly 500,000 people go to jail in one year for statutory crimes such as the failure to produce a pass...”
